According to recent scientific studies, there is a case to be made for the argument that Social media is in fact ruining our brains. Maybe not significantly in the short term, but given it’s massive, worldwide spread and adoption, it is almost certain that social media will have some prolonged impact on our brain functioning. One thing that researchers focused on when considering the possibility that social media is ruining our minds is the sheer frequency and capacity at which most internet users engage in social media. When Facebook first began, hundreds of thousands of users flocked to it almost overnight, and likewise with Twitter, even in its early days over 50,000 tweets were sent in a single day. Fast forward several years and both of these platforms are largely considered to be daily staples in many people’s lives, whether the age of 17 or 45.
This infographic, How Social Media Is Ruining Our Minds, goes into the nitty gritty details of what the researchers have found. While social media won’t make you go crazy, it certainly has proven to have a real affect on our attention spans, ability to multitask, and long-term cognitive and developmental functions, which is something not to be ignored.
